From grass to textiles: The future of sustainable fibres

Could the textiles of tomorrow come from something as common as grass? New research suggests that grass may become a sustainable source of textile fibres – and the results look highly promising.

The work with grass fibres as a raw material for textile production is part of Green Valleys 2.0, a project funded by EU – Interreg ÖKS, exploring innovative bio-based solutions for the future.

In this video, you will see:

  • Nanna Lindgaard Skovborg and Emma Hostrup, Research Assistants at Aarhus University

Together, they demonstrate their ongoing work with transforming grass from a common resource in the fields into a potential raw material for the textile industry.

Great potential in Danish Green Biorefinery – from grass to products (2023) Aarhus University has a unique green biorefinery demonstration platform at AU Viborg, Foulum. Here, The Green Biorefining Technologies Group process and test agricultural and marine biomasses. The biomass is transformed into products that contribute to a more sustainable and biobased society, such as protein for food, animal feed, biomaterials, bioenergy, and biofertilizers. In Denmark, there is huge potential for growing more perennial green crops with significant environmental advantages. By increasing our domestic agricultural biomass production and green biorefining capacity, we can begin to rely less heavily on imports like soya.

The Biobase experiment and the EU project Go-Grass The Biobase platform was established in 2012 to investigate the possibilities for sustainable intensification of our cropping systems. It now feeds into the EU-project GO-Grass (www.go-grass.eu) for investigating which cropping systems deliver the best and most sustainable feedstock for green biorefinery and the production of protein concentrates, bioenergy and biomaterials.
