The Centre for Circular Bioeconomy at Aarhus University (CBIO) is a prominent network of researchers, students, and members from industry and organisations that are working for a biobased and circular bioeconomy. Since its foundation in 2017, CBIO has expanded to include eight departments and centres at Aarhus University, each represented by researchers engaged in interdisciplinary projects focused on circular bioeconomy, both within and beyond CBIO.
Marine and agricultural biomasses are valuable resources. In the transformation from a fossil-based to a biobased society with principles of circularity, biorefining is an essential production form in cascade utilization of biomass for needed products like feed, food, materials, fuel, and energy.
CBIO engages in comprehensive interdisciplinary research across the entire production chain, partnering with national and international industries in the bioeconomy sector. From biomass refining, cultivation, logistics, management, life cyclus analysis, and recycling. Additionally, we assess the environmental and societal impacts of our innovations.
This documentary is produced by the World Bioenergy Association as part of the Bioenergy Horizons series in collaboration with BlackRook Media. The film highlights how interdisciplinary research and a strong focus on cascading biomass use can accelerate sustainable production, and it premiered at COP30 in Brazil in 2025.
In the documentary, Morten Ambye-Jensen, Head of CBIO and Associate Professor at the Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering, together with colleagues from different departments at Aarhus University, presents CBIO’s approach to circular solutions.
